"I would like the prime minister to table an act of parliament that will make it illegal to encourage the public (i.e. using media designed for mass distribution) to lose weight beyond what would be considered, by a properly certified and UK government accredited medical professional, to be reasonable.
I would also like the prime minister to make it illegal to publicly (i.e. using media designed for mass distribution) endorse a dietary regime using a title that implies they are a recognised medical professional when either the title used is not UK recognised or the title does not directly pertain to a medical professional dealing with dietary requirements.
Further more I would like these offenses to have global scope in that even if the offense was committed on non UK soil, if the media could be disseminated to the UK then that person would be arrested the very moment they stepped on UK soil."
Yes, I'd like "Dr" Gillian to have committed a crime, too. (If you've been living on Mars lately, the Bad Science blog should fill you in.) But I somehow think that this isn't going to hold water. I suspect that most of the mad diet advocates would argue that they don't advocate weight loss to below a BMI of 20 or whatever other criterion you used, and would probably be able to find a relatively respectable and respectably-credentialed medic to back them up, too.
Also I'm fairly sure that the "global scope" thing would fall foul of several other laws, though I don't know what or why - it's just a guess.
