Koenigsberg Castle

The petition is entitled Give 12.5 Million Pounds to the Rebuilding of the Castle of Koenigsberg East Prussia and the explanatory notes say
"We the Undersigned call upon the Prime Minister and British Government to give 12.5 Million Pounds to the Rebuilding of the Castle of Koenigsberg in East Prussia as a Gesture of Goodwill and Reconcillation"

Er. Why? It's not that I object, per se, I just wonder why.

T'Internet doesn't suggest there's some manic campaign about this. Indeed, Wikipedia makes it clear that the town centre is based on what was the castle, which somehow makes me think people probably don't want it rebuilt.

Why the specific sum of money? Why the campaign? Who knows ...
