Un-adoption

The petition is entitled allow adopted adults the choice to become officially "unadopted" and revert to their birth name if they wish and the explanatory notes say
"A lot of children are adopted. As adults they may wish to review this decision taken by others and decide for themselves."

I'm not quite sure what form an adult "un-adoption" might take. Adoption is, after all, the removal of rights and responsibilities towards a child from their genetic parents and the providing of these rights and responsibilities to the adopting parents. But since an adult's parents have no legal rights and responsibilities (with the exception, if the adult is unmarried and childless, of potentially being the next of kin if the adult dies intestate), how can they "un-adopt" themselves?

Any adult has a perfect right to call themselves whatever they like; an adult who was adopted as a child can freely revert to their birth name. And if they do not wish their adoptive parents to have that vestigial "right" of being their next of kin should they die intestate, they can simply make a Will.

So, er, what are you asking for?
